Our Research

We strive to improve medical care, particularly cancer care, with our advanced imaging technologies. Based upon visible and near-infrared light, our imaging and sensing approaches are safe, non-invasive, and quantitative. Our goal is to create innovative medical devices that can soon be translated into hospitals and clinics to improve the quality of healthcare.

Specifically, we work in the field of diffuse optics, which allows us to use safe levels of light to interrogate tissue deep beneath the skin. This work, while applicable to many diseases, is presently focused upon breast cancer including risk assessment, screening, differential diagnosis, and predicting individual response to chemotherapy.

“To shorten a man’s suffering, to extend their happy life, what more can you do in the world? This is the legacy I would like to leave.”
